9 U.S. Companies among Top 25 Best Workplaces in India

Based on LinkedIn‘s study of actions, nine American companies are listed among the 25 most desirable companies for employees in India.

At #2 is Amazon: With more than 10,000 employees in India Amazon is rapidly expanding its Prime Video offerings in the country, investing $5 billion in 2016 with plans to double that investment in 2017.

At #3 is KPMG India: This firm operates in 152 countries worldwide. KPMG India has offices in Chandigarh, Gurgaon, Noida, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Kochi, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata.

At #7 is Adobe: India is a key innovation hub for Adobe – its biggest R&D location outside of its headquarters. Nearly 30 percent of the company’s research and development is centered in India. “We have probably grown faster in India than anywhere else in the world,” says CEO Shantanu Narayen.

At #8 is Google: The ability to download maps or YouTube clips for offline access, started in India before going global.

At #12 is Accenture: With 140,000 employees in India, Accenture recently opened a new Cyber Center in Bangalore, where clients, Accenture specialists and other industry experts from universities and beyond can uncover the next generation of security solutions and outpace cyber adversaries.

At #13 is Deloitte: In India, Deloitte offers a range of Audit, Risk Advisory, Tax, Consulting and Financial Advisory services across thirteen cities.

At #16 is Cisco: Cisco is moving beyond its core router and switching business into subscription sales and other sources of recurring revenue. These plans require robust hiring.

At #24 is McKinsey & Company: The company’s insights cover many topics from how India’s largest private bank fosters gender equality, to the state of the country’s private equity sector. More than 70 McKinsey India alumni have become CEOs.

At #25 is Oracle: The company has set up nine incubation centers to contribute to India’s booming startup culture and trains 500,000 students every year through the company’s education program.

Google to Help a Billion Indians Go Online

Google has enabled nine Indian languages to work on the new AI-enabled Google Translate, and it has doubled the number of Indian languages on Gboard, its custom mobile keyboard, to 22. These new additions will allow millions of Indian users to type and search for emojis and GIFs in their native language.

CNN reports that according to a new study by Google and KPMG, the number of  Indian-language web users in India will exceed  536 million Indian-language  by 2021, almost three times the number of English-speaking users in the country. There are roughly 900 million Indians who are not yet online. When they do connect, 90% will be operating in a language that isn’t English, the study concludes.

Googles’ other initiatives at increasing internet penetration in India, include free WiFi at 100 railway stations and a partnership with India’s Tata Trusts to teach women in rural areas to use smartphones.

India’s Media & Entertainment Sector to Grow at 13.9%

According to the FICCI-KPMG media and entertainment industry report 2017, released on the inaugural day of the three-day annual media conclave FICCI FRAMES, this sector in India is projected to grow at a pace of 13.9% CAGR during 2016–21, with advertising revenue expected to increase at a CAGR of 15.3%.

Excerpts of the report from the Economic Times:

  • Television is expected to grow at a CAGR of 14.7 percent over the next five years and both advertisement and subscription revenues are projected to exhibit strong growth at 14.4 percent and 14.8 percent, respectively.
  • Print is projected to continue its growth at 7.3 percent, due to continued readership growth in vernacular markets and advertisers’ confidence in the medium, especially in tier II and tier-III cities.
  • The film sector is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 7.7 percent, as revenue streams broaden driven by the growth of regional content, expansion in overseas markets, and higher digital revenue streams.
  • Digital advertising is expected to grow at a CAGR of 31 percent forming 27.3 percent of the total advertising revenues.
  • The animation and visual effects industry is projected to grow at a CAGR of 17.2 percent, led by the continued growth in outsourced services, and the increasing use of animation and VFX services in India’s television and film space.
  • The Out of Home segment is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 11.8 percent due to the development of regional airports, privatization of railway stations, growth in smart cities, setting up of business and industrial centers, and a growing focus on digital Out Of Ho
  • Radio is expected to grow at a CAGR of 16.1 percent, with the commissioning of new stations in both existing and new cities, and introduction of new genres.

Dubbed Hollywood Films Boost Revenue in India

At the FICCI FRAMES conference in Mumbai, an annual entertainment industry report by consulting firm KPMG stated that there was a 10 percent increase in Hollywood film revenue in India in 2016, and that The Jungle Book was the highest-grossing Hollywood film in India ever, collecting  $38.2 million last year.

The report added that this growth was driven by increasing contribution of dubbed versions, highlighting that over the last two to three years, “nearly 40 percent of English releases are dubbed in at least one local language” in India.

The report also noted that the rising trend of Indian actors featured in Hollywood films, such as Irrfan Khan, who starred with Tom Hanks in Inferno, was another growth factor Hollywood’s share of the Indian market is estimated at about 10 percent, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Google India Encourages Small Businesses to Go Online

A joint study by Google and KPMG titled Impact of internet and digitization on Small and Medium Businesses in India pointed out that 32% of digital businesses cater to customers outside their city, and employ five times as many people as do businesses that are offline; and profits of digitally engaged businesses grow twice as fast compared to offline small companies. The research also revealed that the rise of digital SMBs can help increase India’s GDP by 10 percentage points.

To address the offline 68% SMBs, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, announced the launch of Digital Unlocked, a training program for business owners in India that will empower them with essential digital skills to use the internet to grow their business. The program is offered as a combination of online, offline and mobile modes. The offline training will be conducted in partnership with industry body FICCI, and over the next three years 5,000 workshops will be held across 40 Indian cities. This training course is certified by Google, the Indian School of Business and FICCI, reports Mint.

Additionally, Google launched Primer, a free mobile app designed to teach digital marketing skills in a quick, easy and interactive way. Available for download through the Google Play and iOS app store, Primer can work offline too, and is currently available in English and Hindi with Tamil, Telugu and Marathi versions coming shortly.
